Assassin's Creed Initial Thoughts

Assassin's Creed is an action thriller set in the present and sometime after King Richard's Third Crusade. The protagonist's name is Altier who is a kind of a jerk. His personality resembles a bitter teenager and keeps me from having an emotional connection with him. His dialog is short and delivered with the brattiest tone I've ever heard in a video game. I mean I wish I could slap him myself its so obnoxious. At the same time this is who the character is. In fact you get into this mess because of your own hubris. Basically you botched an assassination and you have to make up for it. Although I feel there is some plot twist in the future because everyone you assassinate seems to think that you are just ill informed. So far the story isn't doing anything interesting and the character doesn't seem to be growing either. Maybe this will all change but for now its pretty standard action thriller plot if you changed the time period you might have the Supreme Ultimate Bourne Creed. Admittedly this isn't that bad as the author is a fan of the Bourne series. But it's not anything special either.

The game control is pretty good but I have a hard time pulling off the combo attack. The game seems like they built it around Parkour. The character can effortlessly climb any building. From the rooftops you can jump over to the next building or on to an adjacent wall (if there is something to grab on to). In fact, you will spend a lo of time on the roof tops of the cities you explore because it is the fastest way to travel. Otherwise you have to push your way through crowds which is much slower. Fighting is not this game's strong point. Its not like Heavenly Sword or God of War where you've got a bunch of combos and you can button mash to your hearts content. You basically can attack with a sword or wait to do a counter. If you are patient you can use your hidden knife and kill people in the true assassin's style but this doesn't get you anything when you battle more than one person. All in all the fighting is my least favorite part of this game. I hope they introduce more combos if there is a sequel. In Ubisoft's defense they probably didn't want this game to be about fighting so maybe I'm just being a fuck.

The visual style of Assassin's Creed is not very unique but this shortcoming is made up in animation. Altier's character scales walls and other obstacles with grace and speed. One of the big selling points of the game is how your character interacts with the crowd and its very well done.

Well I'm tired of writing about this game. Its a great game and I hope you have fun playing it.
